§ Databases · Relational

IBM Db2 backups, natively.

A native backup image, online when archive logging is on and offline (in an approved window) when it is not — run as the instance owner with OS authentication. A logical db2look + db2move mode is also available.

What Xtic runs

db2 BACKUP
db2 "BACKUP DATABASE TESTDB ONLINE TO /xtic/<run> COMPRESS INCLUDE LOGS WITHOUT PROMPTING"

Shown with placeholders. Credentials never appear on a command line: they reach the tool through the environment, a file descriptor or a short-lived file in memory.

Restore paths

  • Into a new database: RESTORE … INTO, then ROLLFORWARD to the end of the backup
  • Original database: REPLACE EXISTING, after approval
  • Logical: the DDL script, then db2move load

Verification

db2ckbkp on the backup image. Every artifact is also hashed, and the stored copy is read back and compared before the run counts as verified.

Version rule

Same or newer release; same endianness family.

Good to know

  • Online backups need archive logging — switching it on is a prerequisite you approve
  • Licence and editions: Community Edition limits apply (4 cores, 8 GB RAM).
